CANGO’s Participation in 2024 Brazil C20 and G20 Social Summit
On November 12, before the C20 summit, CANGO attended the closed-door briefing meeting held by the C20 Steering Committee. In the 2024 C20 Brazil, ten issue-focused working groups were established, which were open to CSOs across the globe with an interest in relevant topics. Throughout the year, a total of 2,545 representatives from 1,760 social organizations in 91 countries participated in formulating policy recommendations via 62 online seminars. The proposals generated by the C20 working groups were officially submitted to the G20 Third Sherpas' Meeting and the Deputy Finance Ministers' Meeting held in July.
On November 13, 2024, the Civil Society 20 (C20) Summit, a pivotal event in the G20 Summit framework, was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nearly 300 representatives of CSOs from across the globe attended the event in person. At the invitation of the host, the Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (Abong), the China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) participated in this summit. Brazil's First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva, attended the summit and delivered opening speech. Experts from the C20 International Steering Committee, representatives of the Brazilian government, and CSO representatives attended the summit, sharing their insights and viewpoints. During the Summit, it was repeatedly mentioned that the world is facing increasingly severe challenges. CSOs are urged to unite and collaborate, aiming to address systemic risks, promote socioeconomic development, and safeguard human rights. Emphasis was also laid on the importance of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, along with proposed measures to strengthen citizen participation, improve judicial justice, and combat corruption. Ms. Wang Xiangyi, Vice Chair & and Secretary General of CANGO, shared China's strategies and achievements in combating hunger and poverty during the roundtable discussion titled "The Global Challenges Ahead of Us".
In addition, Brazil as the presidency of the G20 in 2024, launched an additional G20 Social Summit activity tailored for civil society. Spanning from November 14 to 16, this three-day event marked the first time that the G20 gathered CSOs from across the globe in diverse forms to jointly present their needs and expectations to the G20 Summit. On November 14, the China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE), CANGO, the Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (Abong), and the Brazilian social organization Ação jointly held a side event themed "Pooling Efforts for Poverty Reduction and Contributing Non-Governmental Forces to Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals" at the Praça Mauá in Rio de Janeiro. Participants delved into in-depth exchanges regarding poverty alleviation and jointly probed into the challenges that the Global South countries are currently facing.
Furthermore, Chinese CSOs actively engaged in exchange visits with local Brazilian social organizations and had in-depth conversations with representatives of the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS) and the Meneghetti Foundation, paving the way for more extensive exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Brazilian social organizations in the future.
